The “Intersex Esiste” project was created by Claudia Balsamo, a member of AISIA (Associazione Italiana Sindrome da Insensibilità agli Androgeni), and Daniela Crocetti, a researcher in social history, specifically interested in the body, gender, and medicine. Later on Marta Prandelli joined the group. A researcher in psychosocial studies and expert in gender-related topics, she was the leader of a major research project regarding parents of intersex children in Italy. During 2019/2020, Intersex Esiste benefited from the presence of Manuela Falzone, activist and member of AISIA, who expanded the group's activity together with other social and political organisations. The project is supported by CESD, Centro Europeo Studi sulla Discriminazione (European Centre for the Study of Discrimination), and partly funded by the American group Astraea and the Intersex Fund.
Since the Italian public is poorly acquainted with the subject, the primary endeavor of IntersexEsiste is to disseminate anti-discriminatory, clear and accurate information about the intersex experience and variations in sex characteristics. The collective and interdisciplinary activity is carried out by intersex activists and academics, through workshops and dissemination material. IntersexEsiste is also committed to the creation of an open, informed dialogue among physicians, institutions, patient associations and all Italian organizations involved with intersex rights, to promote the health and rights of people with variations in sex characteristics. In 2020, IntersexEsiste created a national network of intersex patient associations and activists to facilitate collaboration. In June 2022, IntersexEsiste funded the third meeting of the network to discuss common paths and joint actions. Together with this network of activists and allies, IntersexEsiste's stand is that all medical treatments/protocols must protect the right to autonomous decision-making, and the physical integrity of the patient, even when the patient is a minor.
